Friday...

Don't you just love Friday's?

Anyway, today DS has been making up the work from yesterday and doing today's work too. He's doing great! He took his spelling test and got 100%, he's done his math and did great! Now he's doing his grammar and doing well there too. We'll break for lunch when that's done. Then he'll have to do history. We will do his science project from yesterday after we pick up DD from school. (She wants to do it too!) He can do his reading while we wait in line to pick her up. (That's an hour!)

Things are going great! I'm seeing how really smart he is. I already knew it but it's good to see where he's at as far as each subject goes. He's helping much more around the house and his demeanor is so much better. He's having a hard time sometimes coping with his dad being gone but we are working through it together. He smiles more than he did and is much easier to get a long with. I'm seeing positive changes already.

YEA!!!

A sickly day

Well, DS is feeling poorly today. He didn't get much done. He did some free reading. He read over his math and grammar lessons. He didn't do any written work but we did his grammar orally. So what do you think? Does that count for a school day? Hopefully he'll be back on track tomorrow.

Happy Birthday!

Today is DS's birthday. He worked really considering. I figured I'd have a hard time getting his work done. He surprised me. He got right to work and wanted to get done so that it'd be over. He did great! He did P.E., Grammar, Math and Social Studies. He does reading at night. I'm really proud of him.

Tomorrow maybe hard. He's having a bad night, missing his dad. I hope he feels better in the morning.

Happy Homeschooling!

It's a beautiful day

So we went for a walk. It was very nice. Not too hot either. So we've had P.E. now. DS is now working on some math and then vocabulary. We're going to do some free reading today. He is in the middle of a book and is dying to read it. He is also going to do some research on volcanoes today. He was doing some science reading and said he'd like to know more about them so.... today is his lucky day. hehe I'll wager that he will have changed his mind and will tell me that he only put that down because that's all he could think of! Oh well, he'll learn.

I ordered some history curriculum yesterday and I got an email this morning that it had shipped. I got it from Classical Home Education. I'm excited. Now if we like all the Rod and Staff that I got then we will have a full curriculum! If not we'll keep looking.

I think we may spend some time in the flower beds for science. We'll plant some bulbs and maybe some fall flowers. That's science right? Hands on. We'll have some digging and clearing to do and think he will enjoy it.

Monday

Good Monday Morning! Are there any other homeschoolers out there? Just checking.

This morning DS is working on Spelling, and rewriting a book report. He's also doing some current events. Then he has some math ( he's working with decimals this week) and some history. He also some more language arts to do. He's already exercised today too. He'll practice his guitar for music.

I was looking for the 6th grade Rod and Staff grammar curriculum (it's recommended by "The Well Trained Mind.") and it would be about $50 new. I started looking for it used, and found the spelling, grammar, math and science for 6th grade for only $70! So I got it all. I don't know if I'll use it all or not but I can look it over. I think it is supposed to be pretty good. I worry more about the science part than any. If I don't use some it that's probably it.

Well, I better go for now. Any suggestions? Have a great day!

Today....

Well today Mom is feeling a little crowded, but other than that we are doing fine.

DS has done spelling/vocab and handwriting. No he is doing English. Well, he was until it came time for some instruction. I just don't think I like what we have so it's off to the drawing board again. That's okay. We have some extra reading to do today anyway that we can use for both English and reading. Now he is working on some Math review.

For music he will practice the guitar and then he has some research to do for Science ( I guess that's English too!)

I'll try to do better at updating things here. Have a good day!

Hello

Well, we have been working really hard. I'm not sure that one site is going to work for us. It would be great if you were starting at the beginning but to start in the middle... I think it is kind of hard. So we'll see. They still have a lot of neat stuff that we can use though even if the curriculum doesn't work for us.

We are still finding our way though and it's going really well as a whole. He likes it and is much happier and that is WONDERFUL!

A Monday...

Well, we are working hard as usual. I found a new site, Virtual Homeschool International, and we are giving it a try. They have a lot of resources available. I'm not sure it's for us either but I'm just trying different things until I find what works for us.

Today DS has done, spelling... he put each word in his dictionary and wrote the definition for each. Grammar, he worked out of a very old textbook and we talked about sentences and ideas and such. It was probably too easy but it is heading to sentence diagrams so we did it anyway. Now he is working on Math also out of an old textbook. We still have reading and history to do but we may just combine them today. He's been working really hard. He also did some PE and will do music a little later. He started guitar lessons yesterday and so he has to practice.

I'm tired. I've been staying up too late doing lesson plans and researching. It's wearing me out. I'm trying to slow down a bit. We'll see.

Friday!

Yea! It's Friday! I love the weekends. We get to sleep in tomorrow! I've not been able to sleep past 6 and sometimes earlier all week! I'm tired!

Well, today DS took a spelling test and did really well. He only missed 2! They were hard words too.

Then he worked on math. We did the Mean and Averaging today. He did really well there. Just a couple of careless mistakes that he quickly corrected without help.

He's been reading today and did some art. Now he's doing some history. As soon as he finishes we will be reading and hopefully get close to finishing "The Golden Goblet". If you haven't read it, it is actually pretty good. It kind of started slowly (it actually put me to sleep) but has really become interesting. He really likes it.

A little slower...

Okay, for those of you who don't know, I just moved this blog here from Yahoo360. I didn't really like it and I have another blog using blogspot that I like so here we are.

Today has been slower. We've been going full speed and DS has been working really hard so I slowed down a bit.

He took a pre-spelling test this morning and did pretty well. The words are pretty hard. He also did dictation and did it perfectly. His handwriting was awesome!

Then he did some grammar worksheets. Four pages to be exact. Then some math. He did some word problems.

Next he did some research on James Hutton and wrote an essay on him. It's short but it will work. He read about Mr. Hutton on Tuesday in his science book.

Maybe I'll post some of his work here sometime. I'm really proud of him. He stopped for lunch and took a little break. When he was ready he came in on his own and said it was time to do his final draft of his essay. I didn't even have to tell him to do it!! (he had a few corrections to make) How cool is that??

As soon as he is finished with his corrections, we will do some reading. We are little behind in reading "The Golden Goblet".

Internet Field Trip

Today we've been busy. We started out the morning with some copy work to work on his handwriting. He is really improving as long as we are using the handwriting paper but he goes back to sloppy without it. It will come with time...

Next we did a little math. He did multiplication and division review and then tried with the equations. We still have a lot of work to do there. but it's coming.

Next, he went on an internet field trip to Ancient Egypt. He had fun. It will count for history, reading and art. Monday in History he read about Ancient Egypt and then we chose a book called the "Golden Goblet" to read for reading which is set in Ancient Egypt. So it is all tying together. For art he sketched (drew) some of the things he read about and looked at on his "field trip" on to some note cards that he will use for postcards to mail to his dad. So that is also some language arts there. Letter writing.

Later we will read more of the book and if we have time we go over what he missed in math. If we don't have time for that we'll do it tomorrow.

I think things are coming together. I don't want to be too positive and then jinx myself. :op
We are also going to laminate the postcards so that they won't get too messed up in the mail and then Dad can hang them up so we've got to run to Wal-mart to get the laminating sheets.

DS says "Homeschooling is great!" I'm sooooo glad.

A good day...

Well, it's been good today. DS has worked pretty hard. We are still working. He's writing so I have a minute to post here.

Today he did Math. He worked on Equations and little division. He had a little trouble with the equations. He had to make both sides equal but he had to put the operations in. The numbers were there and he had to put whether to add, subtract, multiply or divide. We did it together today and then tomorrow he'll do it himself (hopefully).

Then for Language Arts he wrote his spelling words. He has poor penmanship so this was also a penmanship lesson. He did EXCELLENT! We also went to the library.

For Science we read about "Early Ideas about Earth" and talked about it and now he writing a summary for it. (counts as both Science and Language Arts).

When he's done we checked out a book to go with what we are studying in History and we will start reading it together. Then at night he has free reading for an hour before bed. He's reading a Harry Potter book.

Wow. When you write it down it sounds like we did pretty good. We are still working on our rhythm but I think that may be a forever thing.

So far we've had a good day.

Another Day....

Well, we made it through another day. I feel really unsure but we are working so... I'm still trying to figure it all out. He did really well. We had to take DD to the Dr and he still got most of his work done. I guess it's really going pretty well I'm just insecure. We'll just keep trucking along...

First Day

Well, we made it through our first day yesterday. It went well. There was little arguing and not too much dawdling. We did discover that our public library has very little, no none, of the stuff that I had planned on using this first week so we ended up at the bookstore and bought a few things to get us started. It will take us a while to get our rhythm but we will.

Day One

Well, yesterday we told DH goodbye and spent the day getting over that. Now we are getting to work. We sat down this morning and discussed goals. We need work on this. I don't think either of us are good at it. Now he is doing some math review. I have a placement test for him to take later but thought we might better review first.
Later we are going to the library to get some books to help with history, reading and science. Wish us luck!!

The Beginning...

Well, we are turning in the paperwork today so today is DS's last day of public school. DH leaves tomorrow so there will be no school and Friday is our first day.I think we will spend it setting up. We'll set some goals and do some organizing. We'll probably do some math and critical thinking and we'll go to the library. I'm pretty nervous but we'll get through it. Wish us luck!

The Adventure is planned...

Okay, in the next few days we will begin our homeschooling adventure. DS, who is in the 6th grade will be coming home now to school. We've had a rough couple of years and so we've decided that it this will be the best thing for us. I'm pretty scared and nervous but it will all be okay. DD is in the first grade and for now she wants to be in regular school. I don't know how it will last but it'll give me a chance to get it started with DS anyway. This way she get the basics of reading too. So, join us on our adventure. Suggestions and comments are welcome, just please keep it friendly and clean.
